What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is a condition associated with the large intestine. It leads to inflammation i.e. discomfort and swelling along with, sores being developed on the inner linings of the organ known as ulcers.
This disease can be treated according to its specified location in the digestive tract. It often happens that inflammation occurs only at the rectum-near to the anus. This form of the disease is the initial stage known as ulcerative proctitis. Another type involves the lower end of the colon and rectum; resulting in diarrhea, abdominal pain and halts bowel movements to occur. This is termed as proctosigmoiditis. Left-sided colitis is when inflammation occurs from the rectum to the descending colon. It can be identified by pain on the left side of the abdomen along with weight loss. Pancolitis is when the colon is wholly affected leading to visible weight loss and severe diarrhea. Among the many other types is the acute severe ulcerative colitis that causes fever, profuse diarrhea, bleeding and loss of appetite. After the type of ulcerative colitis has been specified, the treatments progress.
The overall reason behind these types of inflammatory bowel diseases is not evident enough. It has been suggested that these conditions occur mainly due to an immune system malfunction. When the body’s immune system is attacking a foreign virus or bacteria it may cause a reverse response to occur. This targets the digestive tract and their cells are obstructed. However, this disease also occurs because of family history and can be regarded as genetic.

Symptoms

As the symptoms of diarrhea, fatigue, inability for bowel movements to occur and fever are enrolled at the common signs for ulcerative colitis, the patient has to be examined further for evaluating on the severity of their condition by the following methods. Blood tests take place to illustrate whether the patient has anemia or inflammation. Stools are also taken for samples to locate any infection that may be causing such signs. For many, blood obtained in the stool is also checked for further precise analysis. Moreover, flexible sigmoidoscopy is when the doctor inserts a bendable tube in your lower colon which has a small light and a camera present on it. This is termed as biopsy. The sample collected of your colon is taken into account. One form of this biopsy is colonoscopy thereafter the tube and camera inserted a blue dye is also sprayed to make the parts of the ulcerative colitis more visible.

Treatment

The treatments commence after all this data is collected and is primarily based upon the fact of reducing the pain it causes and to prevent further complications to occur. Mostly, medicines that ease the pain are provided like an anti-inflammatory drug, a corticosteroid. Antibiotics are also prescribed to heal the large intestine. Along with these medications, the doctor advises a high protein diet with low fiber components. However; ulcerative colitis is not affected or caused by diet but people with conditions like lactose intolerant are advised to stay away from dairy products. Further diet changes include large quantity intake of vitamins and minerals. Patients should prefer short frequent meals. The meals should be soft and bland to cease the irritations that the ulcers may cause. A dietician or nutritionist should be hired for a proper diet plan for the patients till the time they have gotten rid of the disease. Patients whose condition is not stabilized after diet changes and medications have to go through colectomy i.e. removal of the colon.
